01 October 2018      Martin Higgs, Communications Officer

AUDE is delighted to be able welcome the University of Limerick, Ireland, as our first international member.

Fáilte is fiche roimh gach éinne ó Ollscoil Luimnigh. Táimid ag tnúth go mór le bheith ag obair libh.

In opening AUDE membership to estates and facilities teams in universities beyond the UK we will be able to benefit our members even further by the sharing of knowledge and approaches that this professional network provides. Limerick, on Ireland’s west coast and just a stretch of the Shannon away from the Atlantic, is Ireland’s third largest city. The University supports over 15000 students from its campus in the Castletroy district just to the east of the city.

It also has an Automated Storage and Retrieval System that can hold up to 500,000 books, believed to be the first of its kind in an academic library in Europe)

Established as a university in 1989, the first new university since Irish independence in 1922, Limerick has a proud cultural and educational tradition. The university’s modern specialisms are based in four faculties which include business, health sciences, arts and humanities, and science and engineering. Limerick is noted for its teacher training, sports and materials sciences, engineering, IT and music: the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance which hosts the Irish Chamber Orchestra is one of many leading facilities.

With a proud international outlook, Limerick is a keen participant in the European Union’s Erasmus Programme and partners with over two hundred institutions across 24 European countries; and in addition UL students may study at a wide range of international universities, with partners across the US and Canada, Australasia, China, Brazil and Singapore. In addition, Limerick’s co-operative education of “co-op” programme gives all students and eight-month work placement as part of their degree, Ireland’s first such programme.

With six student villages and a commitment to establish a city-centre base as part of Limerick’s 2030 strategy, there is plenty for Robert Reidy and his team to work on. In joining AUDE they are hoping to collaborate on issues from traffic management to successfully running large scale events and supporting growth in student numbers and we know our members will give them a warm welcome.

Robert Reidy, Director of Buildings and Estates at the University of Limerick, said: “We are delighted to become the first international member of AUDE. However our relationship with AUDE goes back many years. In fact the University of Limerick hosted an AUDE conference in 1996 so we are very familiar with AUDE activities. We look forward to building our relationship with AUDE members in the years to come.”

Speaking on behalf of AUDE, Executive Director Jane White said: “We’d like to offer a huge warm welcome to everyone at the University of Limerick – AUDE’s first international member. We know this network of colleagues and institutions benefits from the sharing of knowledge that happens under the AUDE umbrella, on issues that are far from “UK only” ones. We look forward to working with Robert Reidy and his team in estates and facilities at Limerick.”
