Hear from three refurbishment projects in the sector from Arts University Bournemouth, University of Gloucestershire and University of Newcastle. Each will provide an overview of the project, the rationale for the purchase, pros & cons of a refurb vs new build, how they plan to integrate it with existing campus, challenges and opportunities.
Agenda
11.30 - 12.00 | Tom Marshall, Head of Estates and Campus Services, Arts University Bournemouth Arts University Bournemouth (AUB) has shared its campaign to renovate and restore Bournemouth’s iconic Palace Court Theatre. Following the successful purchase of the last surviving 1930’s art deco theatre in Bournemouth in 2021, AUB have plans in place to see the site restored back to its former glory as a teaching space and fully functioning performance venue; complete with a 400-seat auditorium, interval bar, and rehearsal space. The substantial investment comes as the university embraces a new strategic plan which specifically promotes community and civic responsibility. |
12.00 - 12.30 | University of Newcastle: Henry Daysh Building, Refurbishment of the Year Award Winners 2022 The Education Estates Awards The Daysh building, 10-floor Claremont Tower, and Claremont Bridge, (which spans Claremont Road) were built in the 1960s, and no longer fit for purpose. The refurbishment of the buildings formed part of Newcastle University’s aspiration to modernise and significantly improve the energy efficiency and sustainability of these buildings. A key goal was to harmonise the three structures into a single structure (renamed the Henry Daysh Building), benefitting those that frequent the buildings. Improvements to accessibility were a key aspect of the refurbishment. |
12.30 - 13.00 | Nigel Wichall, Director of Estates, University of Gloucestershire The University of Gloucestershire was granted permission by Gloucester City Council in early 2022 to refurbish an iconic Debenhams building and change it from commercial to educational use. The department store closed its doors for the final time in May 2021. The university plans to use the building as part of a “transformational role” within the heart of the city centre by contributing to the economic and cultural development of Gloucester. |
