Time: 12:00 - 14:00
The new Engineering and Materials facility at the University of Manchester is home to 8,000 students and 1,300 staff. This represents the largest single development undertaken by the University and the biggest capital investment ever made by a higher education institution in the UK, with a project value of £400m, GIFA 85,000m2 (over 11 football pitches), a 10 year project span and four year construction period.
This creative hub provides flexible, innovative spaces throughout. The research labs have been designed to the highest standards, with the ability to evolve to the changing demands of our world leading research. There are extensive, multifunctional teaching and learning facilities redefining the ‘classroom experience’. Similarly the workplace is heralded as one of the most innovative workplace developments in the University sector.
Landing the project successfully required the team to ‘break the mould’ on some well-worn models of thinking, working, entitlement and design, involving innovative approaches to behavioural evolution. Underpinned by a design ethos of equity and community, as well as flexibility to meet changing future needs. We are now seeing this paying dividends in the workplace and the unexpected post-covid, hybrid world.
