‘Levelling Up’ - Accessibility and the University estate – comparing approaches from the UK and US (Nottingham and Princeton)
We will be joined by colleagues from the Estates departments at leading Universities both here in the UK and from Princeton in the US. We will be discussing the different approaches that have been adopted across UK and US Universities and the context that influences that, from regulatory frameworks to cultural demands, from budget parameters to environmental factors.

13:35 - Jane White will chair a conversation around a series of related topics with our guest panel.
Topics will include:
Existing challenges and the approaches taken to overcome them;
the benefits of starting from the design stage;
and implementing a whole-university approach.
14:30 - Open Q&A. An opportunity for delegates to ask questions or respond to the points being made.

The Panel:
Andy Nolan, Development & Sustainability Director, University of Nottingham.
Andy is an experienced, authentic, collaborative senior leader with expertise in sustainable development, estate strategy, planning and management. He has 20+ years’ experience working in both the private and public sector and has worked for 4 universities (Bradford, Leeds Beckett and Sheffield). Andy now works at the University of Nottingham as Development and Sustainability Director with responsibilities for portfolio management (the programme office), estate strategy and capital development and sustainability. Prior to that, Andy was the Director of Sustainable Development at Sheffield City Council and has worked in multi-authority partnerships locally and nationally. Andy Chairs the Sustainability Advisory Group for the Association of University Directors of Estates (AUDE) and is a long-standing member and Fellow of the EAUC.
Andy’s current portfolio includes sustainability strategy, campus development, capital programme (circa £50m/yr), Programme Office and with an operational budget of circa £30m/yr including utilities, transport contracts, waste management.
Andy has particular interests in coaching and mentoring – outside work he is Chairman of one of the oldest junior football clubs in Sheffield, where he lives. He coaches an under-18 girls football club. All of the above explains the grey hair.
James Hale, Senior Capital Projects Manager, University of Nottoingham
James has worked in construction for nearly 25 years, that time has been spent working in consultancy at Davis Langdon & Everest and EC Harris and now at the University of Nottingham. He has dealt with many types of construction and construction related projects, including social housing, academic buildings, offices, laboratories and many others.
James, who is from Nottingham, has been a member of the RICS since 2005. He joined the university in 2009 and is now the Estates Programme lead for the development of the University's new campus, Castle Meadow Campus. He has also been the lead for EDI for 4 years and as part of that successfully procured, commissioned and implemented the AccessAble system to all campuses.
Lesley Davis, Indiana University
Lesley Davis has served as the assistant dean for international programs at the Indiana University Maurer School of Law since 2003. Lesley is also a wheelchair user, a certified Americans with Disabilities Act Coordinator, and the chairperson of the City of Bloomington (Indiana) Council for Community Accessibility. In her dual roles with the university and the city, she often serves as a liaison between the campus of over 50,000 students and the municipality on issues of accessibility and barriers to access in the built environment. As someone who travels internationally for her job, she has become very familiar with different national and regional disability policies, varying attitudes toward disability, and access challenges and solutions in a variety of jurisdictions.
