Date: 29th October 2024 Time: 11.00 - 12.00 Venue: Teams
WEBINAR Encampments and Protests on campus
Speaker: Martin Edwards – Partner at Shakespeare Martineau
Synopsis: The Association of University Directors of Estates are working with colleagues at the Association of University Legal Practitioners and legal firm Shakespeare Martineau to bring you this session. In line with universities’ freedom of speech obligations, estates teams and university leaders want to facilitate lawful protest in ways that are safe for all, while enabling the core functions of the university to continue. Our session will help delegates think about the fine dividing lines between what is or is not acceptable protest. We will aim to cover issues including
Defining peaceful protest, and when it crosses an unacceptable line
Meeting welfare needs for all involved (including access to water and toilet facilities etc)
Knowing when legal action may be necessary on the part of the university.
The session will be supported by examples from HEIs and we welcome your comments and questions in our Q&A.
