The Building Safety Act: Impacts for University Estates - Webinar with Mills & Reeve

Synopsis: This webinar, delivered by Mills & Reeve, will explore the many ways in which the Building Safety Act (BSA) affects university property portfolios, focusing, in particular, on how the BSA has fundamentally changed the way that high-rise student accommodation must be developed and managed. In this webinar we will:

  • Provide an overview of the key aims and provisions of the Act
  • Explain the changes the Act has made to building regulations and how these changes will affect refurbishment and development projects across university estates, regardless of asset class
  • Explore the Higher-Risk Building regime established by the Act, consider what types of student accommodation and other buildings within a typical university portfolio might qualifying a Higher-Risk Building (HRB), and talk through the implications of qualification as an HRB, both for the development and management of the building.
  • Explore the Relevant Building regime established by the Act, its potential application to buildings within a university estate, and the risks and opportunities the qualification of a building as a Relevant Building may provide.

Elizabeth Corke-Webster, Senior Knowledge Lawyer, Mills & Reeve LLP

Elizabeth is a professional support lawyer for our national real estate practice. She advises colleagues across the practice both on transactional legal issues and on general legal and market developments. As part of the knowledge and development team, Elizabeth is responsible for helping to create and deliver training to the practice and for maintaining and developing knowledge resources. Before joining Mills & Reeve as a professional support lawyer, Elizabeth practised as a commercial property lawyer in London, with a broad investment and development practice. 

Iain Murdoch, Principal Associate, Mills & Reeve LLP

Iain specialises in construction law, advising clients on all aspects of project procurement, design and construction, including JCT, NEC, other standard form, and bespoke contracts. His expertise includes acting for owners, developers, contractors, professional consultants, investors, and funders, whether on construction contracts or related real estate and finance deals. Iain’s recent experience includes building safety, construction framework, new build, refurbishment and heat network projects for HE clients.
