Synopsis:
AUDE’s Supplier of the Year 2026, engineering consultancy, Curtins brings extensive experience supporting 74 universities in delivering high-performing, future-ready estates. This session will share practical insights from across the sector, including flagship projects such as Teesside University’s BREEAM Outstanding BIOS facility, to address the evolving challenges facing estates teams.
Andy Buckley and Stephen Beggs will explore how universities can respond to pressures around funding, compliance, decarbonisation, and estate performance through a joined-up, engineering-led approach. Focusing on eight core areas: funding, compliance, estate decarbonisation, masterplanning, digital estate, envelope, space optimisation, and public realm, Curtins will demonstrate how these can be unlocked to deliver more resilient, efficient and adaptable campuses.

Speakers:

Stephen Beggs BSc (Hons) CEng MICE is Business Unit Director in Curtins’ Bristol office, leading a Civil & Structural engineering team and supporting the delivery of Higher Education projects. Stephen is CARE Accredited and leads Curtins’ national approach to carbon reduction, with a focus on embodied carbon across university estates. With over 30 years’ experience, he has delivered estate transformation projects from feasibility through to construction, including work with the University of Bristol and University of Reading. Stephen is also active in promoting sustainable development within the Higher Education sector.
Andy Buckley BSc (Hons) CEng MICE IMIStructE is responsible for leading the Civil and Structures Team in Curtins’ Leeds office as Director and sits on Curtins Higher Education Steering Group. Andy is a former board member for the JBM and is heavily involved in developing relationships between universities and industry, with significant experience of projects linked to estate transformation programmes, from feasibility through to construction. Andy has also been Framework Manager on University Frameworks including University of Leeds, Huddersfield, Sheffield, and Leeds Beckett.
