Title: The real cost of a square metre: how understanding how expensive space is can help you use less of it (and rationalise your estate).
Date: 29 October 2026
Time: 15.30 - 16.30
Synopsis
Universities are perfectly capable of understanding how much their space costs (using the good data that they currently have on operational costs). We argue that including these operational costs as well as depreciation, give a better understanding of the real annual cost of space. When you fully appreciate how much space costs, it’s easier to start to demand that space is better used. Whilst on its own this won’t deliver a reduced estate, but what it will do is to enable the organisation understand what areas are more costly, and can drive strategic change in the university portfolio.
One truism needs repeating, ‘the best way to reduce estates costs is to have less estate’.
