Broadly in estates we know what we have to deliver each year. There are three terms of safe, clean and secure learning and research environments for us to facilitate. We are used to the idea that summer is a busy period for us, with major projects often receiving their final push in time for the new academic year. And we are used to our activities slotting around and providing a framework for the teaching and research for which our institutions are known. But there’s a real sense at the moment that this applecart might be about to be upset. Financial constraints are headline news – the sense of a system not working for student, or taxpayer, or government. And actually not working for universities either. There is talk of the imminence of mergers, or worse. And in any likely future change scenario, estates will need to be at the very front of planning. Space change? Space reduction? Space that is increasingly removed from the historic hub of the university campus? Add to this the lifelong learning entitlement, changing pedagogy and the dramatically different tech and delivery expectations of the current generation of students, and it starts to feel like a system reboot could be coming our way. How might the schools, colleges, universities and employers of the near future collaborate to create a tertiary education system that works for all those of 16 years and older? And with less than two months having passed since the 2024 General Election, what are the early smoke signals from the government telling us about their plans for higher education?

Speakers:

Dr Diana Beech, CEO, London Higher

Lewis Cooper, Director of Public Affairs and Campaigns, Independent Commission on the College of the Future

AUDE’s whole remit and core vision is that by joining together we learn and share and develop better professional practice than we could ever achieve on our own. With this central belief in mind, our second main session of the Showcase gives a platform to the leads of all of our special interest groups to help delegates understand more about the key projects and activities your association is involved with right now. BIM4Estates Group

Are you getting the best out of two industry leading technology providers within your organisation? Do you regularly hear about Digital Twins/Campuses but often do not understand where to start?

The BIM4Estates group have identified that there is a clear gap in knowledge surrounding two industry wide tools that nearly all of us in Higher Education have access to, that yet none of us are taking full advantage of. In sharing knowledge on these with the sector, we hope to inspire others to embark on a journey to implementing a digital twin of their campus and improving operational and strategic decision making.

As part of this session, you are going to hear directly from those leading providers, Autodesk and Esri. This will be an informative session where we will look to cover:

  • What applications you have access to as part of the Autodesk AEC licencing (and other applications)?
  • What is Esri ArcGIS and what applications does your organisation have access to?
  • What you could be doing right now with both of these applications, hearing about real life use cases.
  • The art of the possible, some of the industry leading developments currently available.
  • What does the future look like - understanding the Esri & Autodesk business partnership and future developments

Speakers:

Matt Hoper, Data Manager (Estates), University of Birmingham

Brett Plant, Head of Estates Information and Systems, University of Warwick

Paul Eyden, BIM Manager, University of Warwick

Nikita Sobolev, GIS Consultant, Esri

Siva Koppula, Digital Twin Customer Adoption Specialist , Autodesk

Decarbonisation Plans – A Good Practice Guide

AUDE has recently launched a Guide to Decarbonisation Plans which brings together the experience of the sector into one place. The Guide aims to demystify decarbonisation plans for all and set out how future-plans or the development of existing plans can be tailored to an individual institution’s situation and needs. All of this is aimed at making the plans more impactful and easier to implement, increasing their effectiveness in reducing real-world emissions. This session will go through the Guide, showing how it is relevant to all institutions – small or large, experienced, or starting out on their carbon journey.

Speakers:

Dr Roddy Yarr, Director of Sustainability, University of Glasgow

Andy Shepperd, Associate Director, Sustainability, Arup

Social Learn Campus – the right ingredients for better student experience

How can space support social learning experiences for our students? What even is social learning? And how do we build stewardship for our social learn campuses? We will share emerging findings on these themes from our Social Learn Campus research project, commissioned by AUDE, UDF and Willmott Dixon. We invite you to participate in this interactive social-learning-in-action session and together shape the research moving forward.

Walking the talk of social learning, we encourage you to join the pre-session activity on the AUDE discussion board to exchange insights and ideas, and download a pre-reading document.

Let's shape the Social Learn Campus discourse together.

Speakers: Dr. Hiral Patel, Director of Engagement, Cardiff University Fiona Duggan, Director, FiD

This workshop will explore all these matters with a panel of invited guests aiming to show you what steps you can take to support your own career development.

Universities are already feeling the impact of Climate Change on their operations and their bottom line. For Estates colleagues, there are challenges ahead in terms of balancing the needs to continue delivering high quality teaching research within aging buildings and infrastructure. The session will provide a view on how a broad risk management approach can help identify opportunities for improvements and a basis on which to focus budgets and resources to support the core mission.

Small Higher Education Institutions
This session will focus on current challenges within the construction industry when clients go to market to procure their projects. We will look at risks faced by clients and contactors and how this is factored into tender prices. With high profile contractors struggling and the collapse of some large name M&E firms we explain how this has affected the marketplace and the impact on confidence within financing institutions.
Andy Dedman brings a wealth of experience and examples from small capital schemes to some of the largest developments in London. With his entertaining style and sense of humour it’s a session not to be missed.
